Having been raised in San Fransisco's Mission District in the 70's and 80's, Quique, as known by friends, experienced a melting pot of music influences. With percussion jams everywhere, Dolores Park became the door way and the Mecca of Afro Cuban rhythms. While at the park, at the age of 14, Quique experienced conga drumming for the first time and became his passion.
He purchased his first drums and attended formal workshops lead by Raul Rekow, John Santos, Jose Flores and John Calloway just to name a few.
He adopted and studied the Cuban style of drumming. He was intrigued to know how these rhythms were incorporated into latin rock. Quique had many jam sessions with some of the great conga players known, Raul Rekow, Joe Mingo Lewis, John Santos and the Escovedo's. He also played with various latin groups.
In his late twenties,Quique took a break from music, to start a family, (alhough continuing his practice.) and involve his self in other activities. When time permitted, Quique returned to playing congas at full force. In 2005 he met with Antonio Marquez and Ernesto and auditioned for the group "Zebop".
He became a member of the group and found that his style of playing meshed well with the over all objectives of the band. His knowledge of, Afro Cuban rhythms has contribute to the sounds of the rythm section, adding flavor to the sound and music of Santana.
